In September 2022, the poverty rate declined compared to the previous year. This trend was seen nationally – as well as in both urban and rural areas – with an estimated 140,000 people moving out of poverty.
Despite the rural poverty rate declining, it remains considerably higher than in urban areas. It is estimated that more than 26 million Indonesians are living in poverty.
Poverty varies considerably province to province, but there is a clear trend towards higher poverty rates in the easternmost reaches of the country.
However, rural Indonesians face much lower inequality than their urban compatriots, who have witnessed rising inequality in recent times.
